Zak studied at the Royal Northern College of music where he attended and performed at master classes featuring artists such as Ed Thigpen, Victor Mendoza, Phil Woods and the late Stan Barker. After graduating he went straight into teaching and performing. As well as teaching saxophone and clarinet for 15 years, he has created youth jazz projects in Thurrock and is currently a co-leader of the Southend music services jazz workshop.
As a performer, Zak was involved in a residency as the band leader of the ‘Fellowship’ which featured Guthrie Govan and Pete Riley. He has also worked in a duo with Guthrie and performed with him in the United States, Turkey and most recently, the Eddie Lang Festival in Italy. He has also performed with artists ranging from Mick Hucknall to Narada Michael Walden. He is currently working with Reg Webb performing at London venues such as the 606 club and Boisdales
